Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday criticised European bureaucracy for backing individuals associated with severe abuses in the past, saying public support for his Government remained strong despite the interference.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze noted that European bureaucrats openly supported the Government’s opponents before the parliamentary elections, but their statements ultimately proved counterproductive.
“European bureaucracy, represented by the EU Ambassador, openly backed individuals who, during their time in power, were associated with severe incidents, including repressions, total violations of media freedom, business extortion, prisoner torture, and more, which naturally posed significant challenges for Georgia. However, contrary to their expectations, the public maintained an even stronger pro-government stance”, he said.
“We have already gone through the most difficult processes. Generally, 2022 was the toughest year, preceded by challenging events in 2021. 2024 was no less difficult, but we successfully overcame this stage of challenges. Serious difficulties remain. Before the parliamentary elections, the European bureaucracy openly supported our opponents”, the PM continued.
Kobakhidze added that the full mobilisation of ruling party supporters at polling stations was a direct response to what he described as unprecedented and unfair interference and pressure from European bureaucrats.
“Consequently, their statements were counterproductive. Unfortunately, this process continues. Last year, there were several unfair decisions, and this year it continues; however, we manage to protect our national interests”, he said.
“We hope that the European Union and its bureaucracy will eventually respect Georgia’s sovereignty, in which case their approach will change. For now, the situation remains difficult within the European bureaucracy, and our level of relations remains the same as in previous years, which is very regrettable”, Kobakhidze concluded.
