Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Sunday said the US Vice President JD Vance was well-informed about Georgia and expressed readiness to renew and further strengthen bilateral relations.
“On the first day, a ceremonial dinner of the International Olympic Committee was held, attended by country leaders and presidents of national Olympic committees. The event was large in scale and provided an opportunity for discussions. In this format, following greetings, Marco Rubio approached me, after which JD Vance also greeted me and a brief, warm, sincere, and positive conversation took place”, he said.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Kavelashvili noted that the Vice President of the United States spoke warmly about Georgia and further mentioned the Patriarch.
“He spoke very warmly about our country, and I was surprised by how well-informed the US Vice President was - he knew that we are a Christian country, a nation that follows traditions, and he even mentioned the Patriarch. He then added that they had recently established a National Day of Prayer on May 17. When we told him that in Georgia, exactly 10 years ago, May 17 was declared the Day of Family Purity at the initiative of the Patriarch, he was very pleased. It was a sincere and warm interaction. This was evident as well - I believe the public saw the photos. When discussing family values and traditions, especially Christian values, we Georgians speak confidently, as we are a nation with a long Christian history. We also informed him that this year we will mark 1,700 years, with major events planned in Georgia. He listened to all of this with great interest”, the President said.
Kavelashvili added that a brief working conversation also took place with JD Vance, during which the latter said he was informed about Georgia and that relations would certainly be renewed.
“Of course, there was also a brief working discussion. He stated that yes, they possess information and that closer relations will definitely be renewed. Many processes are ongoing globally; he said they are informed, continue to receive additional information, and will certainly seek to renew relations with us”, he concluded.
Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maka Botchorishvili attended an official reception hosted by the President of the International Olympic Committee Kirsty Coventry.
During the event, President Kavelashvili and Minister Botchorishvili met with leaders from various countries, including US Vice President JD Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
