Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee, on Thursday commented on the report by the US House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary, which highlighted that the European Commission had exerted influence over social media platforms and interfered in elections across Europe.
In his remarks, Kadagishvili noted that this was no surprise for the ruling Georgian Dream party.
“There is confirmation from the United States and other countries that censorship was being carried out, including restrictions on freedom of speech. This does not surprise us because we experienced these incidents firsthand”, he said.
“In Georgia, fact-checking organisations were under the control of former members of the United National Movement or NGOs affiliated with them. Naturally, this led to the imposition of ideological standards in that direction”, Kadagishvili concluded.
