Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said the very fact that European Union representatives had not even commented on the events of October 4 once again confirmed the real intentions of the European bureaucracy, as expressed in the statement of their spokesperson.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that EU officials had effectively expressed direct support at the time for the attempted overthrow on October 4.
“They openly expressed support for the attempted overthrow on October 4. At that time, the official spokesperson of the European Commission publicly endorsed the action aimed at overthrowing the Government, which was a very regrettable and tragic event”, he said.
“The fact that they have not commented on the October 4 events only further confirms the real intentions of the European bureaucracy, as reflected in their press spokesperson’s statement. This is a very unfortunate development, highlighting the serious situation in Europe”, Kobakhidze concluded.
On October 4, 2025, large-scale protests in Tbilisi escalated into a dramatic confrontation, as a group of radical demonstrators tried to storm the presidential palace. The unrest occurred on the same day Georgia held municipal elections.
Authorities detained five opposition figures, including Paata Burchuladze. They are now facing charges of plotting to overthrow the Government - a potential offence that could carry lengthy prison sentences.
Government officials described the events as a failed coup attempt orchestrated with foreign backing. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze called the protests “an attempted overthrow of the constitutional order”.
