Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Wednesday responded to an interim report published by the US House Judiciary Committee, which claims that the European Commission “regularly interferes” in national elections of EU member states.
Speaking to journalists, Papuashvili said the report is yet another example of what he described as Brussels moving toward a “civilizational abyss”.
“Our main weapon is the truth, and because all our actions and statements are based on the truth, it sometimes takes weeks, months, or even a year for that truth to be revealed or recognised. One fact remains - our truth is always acknowledged”, he said.
“One such truth is precisely this: yes, Brussels interferes in the elections of other countries. The case of Georgia is the most severe example. The [EU] Ambassador directly interfered and was involved in the election campaign, using NGOs funded by Brussels. After losing the 2024 elections, there were attempts to undermine democracy and the will of the Georgian people. They are annulling 1.2 million voters who supported the [ruling] Georgian Dream [party]”, the Speaker concluded.
The US House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday published an interim report titled The Foreign Censorship Threat, Part II: Europe’s Decade-Long Campaign to Censor the Global Internet and How It Harms American Speech in the United States.
One of the chapters of the report claims that “the European Commission regularly interferes in national elections of EU member states”.
