Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Sunday lashed out at Kéthévane Gorjestani, France24 foreign affairs correspondent and daughter of President Salome Zourabichvili, following her critical remarks regarding Donald Trump and his administration's policies.
Machavariani dismissed Gorjestani’s recent commentary on the internal dynamics of the US Republican Party, suggesting that her political stance was a reflection of her mother’s influence.
The ruling party official argued that both Zourabichvili and the domestic radical opposition were fundamentally aligned against the political ideology represented by Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump is against the spread of ultra-left ideology and opposes illegal migration. Our radicals strongly dislike this. When we passed the law against anti-LGBT propaganda, not a single radical opposition party supported it. This is what irritates them most about Donald Trump; he called everything by its name - the simple truth that there are only two sexes, that a man cannot become a woman and vice versa - and for the radicals, this is unimaginable”, Machavariani said.
The backlash came after Gorjestani has spoken about deepening internal divisions within the US Republican Party and the challenges it faces ahead of upcoming midterm elections, warning that migration - one of the party’s core political pillars - could now become a source of political damage.
