A special block train service has been launched between the ports of Poti and Baku, significantly reducing cargo transit time between the two ports, Georgian Railways has announced.
According to the railway company, a ceremonial event was held at the Poti terminal to mark the arrival of the first block train. The event was attended by the heads of Georgian and Azerbaijani Railways.
Georgian Railways stated that the block train will operate on a regular schedule and will have a positive impact on simplifying container transportation and reducing transit time. In particular, it will ensure rail transportation of empty containers traveling from Poti to Baku and back. This initiative will not only ease the load on highway infrastructure but will also be more environmentally friendly.
The company noted that the initiative will support safe and efficient container transportation along the Middle Corridor, making the route more attractive and competitive.
“With the establishment of a fixed schedule and tariffs for block train operations, cargo owners will be able to plan in advance the arrival and return times of their containers in Poti. This innovation will also be financially beneficial for Georgian Railways and will generate additional revenue for the company”, said Lasha Abashidze, the Director General of Georgian Railways.
