Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee, on Wednesday said the growing global power rivalry had led to fragmentation within Europe and the Euro-Atlantic space, commenting on recent remarks by EU Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas.
In his remarks, Kadagishvili noted that Europe was currently searching for a new geopolitical “centre of gravity” amid shifting global dynamics.
“Global power rivalry has triggered a process of fragmentation within Europe itself and within Euro-Atlantic unity. What we were saying is no longer just our own view - now all high-level representatives are acknowledging this reality. Kaja Kallas’s words mean exactly that. They are now searching for a new centre of gravity”, he said.
The official suggested that this search could involve stronger ties with countries such as India or Iran, or even a reassessment of relations with Russia as a possible path toward peace and normalisation.
“What that centre of gravity will be - whether ties with India or Iran, or whether they may ultimately conclude that peace and normalisation with Russia would be a better option for Europe. The fact is that geopolitical fragmentation is unfolding before our eyes”, Kadagishvili concluded.
EU Commission Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said that the United States no longer viewed Europe as the central point of gravity in international politics.
