Concerns have been expressed over a possible deviation of Georgia from its European path, however, Khatuna Totladze, Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, on Monday emphasised that European Union membership remains the country’s primary foreign policy objective, firmly anchored in relevant constitutional provisions.
Speaking in Geneva during the review of Georgia’s National Report on the state of human rights protection for 2021–2025, conducted within the framework of the UN Universal Periodic Review, Totladze stressed that claims suggesting Georgia has halted negotiations or the EU accession process are factually inaccurate.
“Concerns have been expressed over Georgia’s possible deviation from its European path - I would like to emphasise that European Union membership remains the main goal of the country’s foreign policy, which is supported by the relevant constitutional provisions”, Totladze said.
“The claims that the Georgian Government has somehow suspended negotiations with the European Union or the accession process are factually inaccurate. The European Union has not yet made a decision to open accession negotiations with Georgia; therefore, in reality, there is no issue of negotiations being suspended”, she concluded.
