Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, on Thursday expressed hope that the full dismantling of the deep state would not remain merely a pre-election pledge by US President Donald Trump, and the process would ultimately be carried through to completion.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Makhashvili noted that the deep state appeared to have highly influential levers, including within the US bureaucracy, which so far prevented a complete reset of the system.
“There have been some positive steps, including the dismantling of corrupt and criminal NGO networks and the termination of improper funding, but overall, we still see that the process is not complete, especially from Georgia’s perspective. We hope that the full elimination of the deep state will not remain just a pre-election pledge by Trump, and that he will ultimately carry the process through to its end”, he said.
“We are watching this process closely, and we hope it will have a positive impact on bilateral relations as well. It seems that the deep state holds such influential levers, including within US internal bureaucracy, that so far the process has not been fully rebooted”, the Chair concluded.
The US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard emphasised that the deep state continued to pose a threat to the United States, stating that representatives of the deep state have politicised US institutions and intelligence agencies, turning state structures into tools used against citizens.
