Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, on Wednesday said the authorities would ensure that prices were not inflated and reflect the economic reality in the country.
“If we identify any problems in the formation of these prices, most importantly, we will ensure that they are not inflated and correspond to the economic reality in which Georgia finds itself. This is extremely important for our population; it was their demand as well”, he noted.
“As a responsible government, we are obliged to study this issue thoroughly, correct what needs to be corrected - whether from a legislative standpoint or in existing practice - and investigate what needs to be investigated. In any case, this will be a very interesting, several-month-long process, the ultimate goal of which is to reduce prices in areas that are critically important and of concern to our population and to all of us”, Makhashvili concluded.
The first meeting of the government commission established to address food prices has already been held. The coordinating commission is expected to present its conclusions in April.
It has been announced that the commission will examine not only food prices but also the prices of medicines and fuel.
According to the ruling Georgian Dream party, the commission will work for three months. In parallel, the issue will also be reviewed at the parliamentary level.
The ruling team has expressed confidence that tangible results will be achieved.
