Davit Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Monday said the Georgian Government has chosen the only correct path - protecting its national interests - amid the changing global order.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Matikashvili noted that Georgia should not become involved in the confrontation between major world powers.
“One thing is clear: the global political order that was established after the end of World War II and later following the collapse of the Soviet Union among the world’s largest players practically no longer exists today. The assumptions that were considered a given even a few years ago, before the war in Ukraine, are no longer valid. All of this requires rethinking. A very good, clear example of this is the labyrinth of confrontation and turbulence that the European Union and the United States are entering over Greenland. This is naturally an integral part of their political, military, and geopolitical situation”, Matikashvili said.
“We hope that the issue of Greenland will be resolved peacefully. However, Georgia, as a small nation for whom sovereignty, independence, and national identity are extremely precious - values we have defended for centuries with the sword, firm policy, and diplomacy - must not enter into confrontations between major powers, and it has not done so”, he continued.
He added that an unbalanced and reckless policy could have caused significant harm to Georgia, particularly in the period following the start of the war in Ukraine.
“We have taken the only correct path. The only right direction is the protection of our national interests”, Matikashvili concluded.
