Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Saturday condemned the alleged secret meeting between Germany’s Ambassador Peter Fischer and radical opposition activists, warning that attempts to escalate protests through human casualties would be unacceptable.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that Fischer allegedly encouraged opposition activists to adopt tactics that would mimic Iran’s protest dynamics, where casualties triggered mass radical demonstrations.
“There is also information that Mr. Fischer is urging the radicals - the protests have already lost their momentum a long time ago, and to revive it, they need to follow the scenario that unfolded in Iran. Specifically, there must be some type of sacrifice to give the protest new momentum”, he said.
The official further added that the radicals understand that protests founded on falsehoods would eventually fail, but suggested that sacrificing a participant could artificially manipulate public perception and escalate agitation.
“They know that a protest based on falsehood will eventually fizzle out, but if they sacrifice one of their own protesters, it will be easier to mislead the public and artificially escalate the agitation”, Machavariani concluded.
According to information circulating in political circles, a confidential meeting allegedly took place on January 15 at the German Embassy, where Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, reportedly met with members of various radical opposition groups.
Sources claim that among those present at the strictly closed-door meeting were activists Luka Mishveladze, Megi Feradze, Archil Gochitashvili, Davit Sekhniashvili, Sergei Kancheli, Nikoloz Khosroshvili, Anni Fridonashvili, and Davit Kashiashvili.
When asked about the meeting with the German Ambassador and its content, the activists avoided answering, although they confirmed the audience took place.
Imedi TV also reached out to the German embassy on this matter, but no response has been received to date.
