Davit Matikashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Saturday criticised the alleged secret meeting between Germany’s Ambassador Peter Fischer and opposition activists in Georgia, calling it a violation of the Vienna Convention and warning against foreign interference.
In his remarks, Matikashvili warned that any internal or external actors attempting to radicalise protests in Georgia would be closely monitored and held accountable.
“Let everyone be warned - whether internal or external, any actor supporting radicalisation. Any influence coming from outside Georgia will be fully transparent. Otherwise, the state will, of course, use all available measures to ensure compliance with the law”, he said.
The official noted that the meeting, now reportedly confirmed, constitutes a serious breach of diplomatic norms under the Vienna Convention.
“Moreover, no one will be allowed to let the tragedy and misfortune that we unfortunately see in Iran occur in Georgia. The fact of these meetings, now effectively confirmed, constitutes yet another gross violation of the Vienna Convention”, Matikashvili concluded.
According to information circulating in political circles, a confidential meeting allegedly took place on January 15 at the German Embassy, where Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, reportedly met with members of various radical opposition groups.
Sources claim that among those present at the strictly closed-door meeting were activists Luka Mishveladze, Megi Feradze, Archil Gochitashvili, Davit Sekhniashvili, Sergei Kancheli, Nikoloz Khosroshvili, Anni Fridonashvili, and Davit Kashiashvili.
When asked about the meeting with the German Ambassador and its content, the activists avoided answering, although they confirmed the audience took place.
Imedi TV also reached out to the German embassy on this matter, but no response has been received to date.
