Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday expressed concern over the position of Moldova’s authorities regarding the country’s sovereignty, stating that their willingness to relinquish independence raised serious questions.
Kobakhidze commented on statements from Romania indicating readiness to seriously consider reunification with Moldova.
“What is concerning for us is the position of the Moldovan authorities when they are ready to relinquish sovereignty and support the abandonment of independence”, he said.
The Prime Minister emphasised that Georgia supported Moldova’s sovereignty and the right of the Moldovan people to decide their own future.
“We support Moldova’s sovereignty, unless the Moldovan people themselves decide otherwise. In general, I will say once again that what is concerning is the attitude of the Moldovan authorities toward their own country’s sovereignty. Of course, Romania may have an interest in expansion - that is their business. For us, the most concerning aspect of all this is precisely the position of the Moldovan authorities, when they are ready to relinquish sovereignty and support the abandonment of independence. That in itself speaks volumes”, Kobakhidze concluded.
