Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said his Government was placing special emphasis on developing the country’s transit and connectivity functions, noting that major investments and concrete projects were already underway.
In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted these efforts were directly contributing to the growth of exports and the strengthening of Georgia’s role as a transit hub.
“We pay special attention to developing the country’s transit and connectivity functions. Very large investments are being made in this area, we have specific projects, and of course all of this contributes to the development of exports and, in general, to the development of transit through our country”, he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted strong export performance in December, emphasising its importance for addressing the imbalance between imports and exports.
“The December figures are very impressive - exports increased by 22.5%, which is very significant. One of our key objectives is to eliminate the imbalance that exists between imports and exports. Naturally, such data are impressive and very important for our country”, he noted.
Kobakhidze also pointed to significant growth in trade with China, stating that cargo flows increased by 48% over the year, according to preliminary data.
“Specifically, for example, regarding trade with China, cargo flows over the year, according to current data, have increased by 48%. We will do everything possible in all directions to fully utilise our country’s potential - precisely in these areas: connectivity, transit, and the development of our export potential. A great deal is being done specifically by the Ministry of Economy and various Government agencies, and efforts in this direction will continue in the future”, he concluded.
