Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Thursday expressed disappointment over the European Union’s approach to Georgia, stating that 2026 has begun with the same rhetoric from what he described as “Eurocrats”.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that this development was largely expected.
“In principle, we did not expect anything different”, he said while commenting on Georgia’s EU accession process.
Despite this, the official noted that the ruling party still hopes the EU will reconsider and change its approach toward Georgia.
Machavariani criticised what he called unfair and unfounded statements suggesting that Ukraine and Moldova are ahead of Georgia in terms of reforms. He argued that such assessments are detached from reality.
“I would like to remind our society that in neither Ukraine nor Moldova does an opposition media practically exist”, he stated.
He added that the EU’s rhetoric remains unchanged and is based on perceptions rather than facts.
“They are trying to create certain perceptions. However, they fail to analyze that the citizens of our country can already clearly distinguish reality from fairy tales”, Machavariani concluded.
