Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Friday commented on a recent letter sent by several US senators and members of Congress to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in which they urged the US administration to protect former American personnel allegedly “unfairly targeted by Georgian officials”.
Kavelashvili stressed that this move was part of an ongoing effort to discredit the Georgian government.
“It should come as no surprise to our society - disinformation and double standards have become familiar to us. Those who authored this letter and addressed it to Marco Rubio are often known for spreading disinformation and deliberately distorting facts about Georgia and its government. This is a continuation of the same pattern”, the President said.
Kavelashvili further recalled that for years, the Georgian side had been raising concerns that certain organisations, such as USAID and NED, were involved in funding radical movements in Georgia.
“Even the current US administration has acknowledged that these organisations have been involved in revolutionary and radical activities in other countries. Our society is well-informed about what is happening around us”, he continued.
Kavelashvili emphasised that the Georgian Government remains open to dialogue and cooperation based on national interests.
“We continue to pursue fair, national interest–based policies in relations with all countries. I recently visited the United States, met with officials, and reiterated the same message there. We are open to dialogue; we have nothing to hide or retract. The initiative now lies with them”, the President noted.
He also highlighted the shared values between Georgia and the United States in terms of protecting national interests.
“The US President himself has said at the UN that every country must defend its national interests. We have always been ready for this. There is a clear value alignment between us and former President Trump’s vision, and we have long expressed our readiness for dialogue based on that alignment”, Kavelashvili concluded.
