The first step Brussels must take to return to the path of European values is to renounce disinformation and propaganda, said on Friday Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili.
In a social media message, Papuashvili argued that Brussels had abandoned European values when it recognised disinformation and propaganda as acceptable political tools.
“Two false narratives, into which Brussels has invested enormous political energy and financial resources, are:
- The Georgian Parliament adopted a ‘Russian law’;
- The Georgian Government has halted the EU integration process”, he said.
“Time has shown that the law is American, that it was Brussels itself that suspended the integration process, and that the narrative is an empty vessel. Narratives cannot replace reality. The truth cannot forever be concealed by propaganda”, the Speaker continued.
He added that Brussels’ value decline began when it recognised disinformation and propaganda as acceptable political instruments, thereby violating the very principles upon which Europe was built - freedom, justice, and honest dialogue.
“The attempt to achieve moral goals through immoral means eventually undermines even the noblest of intentions”, he noted.
“Therefore, the first step Brussels must take to return to the path of European values is to renounce disinformation and propaganda. Only by restoring the truth can Brussels once again become the Europe that was once synonymous with freedom and justice”, Papuashvili concluded.
