Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday responded to a group of American congressmen, who called on the US Government to seek assurances from Georgia’s authorities that former US employees would not be subjected to defamation or attacks.
Kaladze emphasised that Georgia was not attacking anyone and was merely defending its sovereignty and national interests, further pointing out that the Georgian Government supports President Donald Trump and his administration in their key pledges - defeating the deep state and ending the war in Ukraine.
“When President Trump was elected, we shared the narrative he spoke about - that he would defeat the deep state and bring an end to the war in Ukraine. We are watching and waiting. Once the deep state is defeated, we too will feel the impact. We are not attacking anyone; we are defending our country”, the ruling party official said.
He further accused organisations funded by US aid programs of interference in Georgia’s internal affairs, citing USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
“When we talked about funding, remember that in 2020 USAID ran campaigns suggesting that elections were rigged - in reality, they falsified those studies themselves. NED was also involved, financing violent groups. We are against that. We want healthy, friendly, and mutually respectful relations”, he continued.
Kaladze reiterated that the Georgian Government was ready to renew relations with the United States but would not tolerate threats or condescending statements like those made under the previous US administration.
“Even before President Trump took office, we were saying that foreign money was funding extremist organizations and being used for internal political activities and revolutionary attempts. Our opponents claimed we were lying. Later, the President of the United States himself openly spoke about the same thing - that such organizations were sending money to different countries, including Georgia, to provoke coups. The Georgian Government is open to reviewing and refreshing relations transparently. The kind of threats we heard during the previous administration are unacceptable. We are an independent country - our ancestors fought for this freedom so that we would never again be dependent on anyone”, Kaladze concluded.
