Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, on Thursday said it was not new that there was no law for swindlers and that the rule of law was just empty words for them.
Gorduladze’s comment came after the Georgian Anti-Corruption Bureau had fined Mamuka Khazaradze, the leader of the opposition Lelo party, for failing to declare income received from renting his apartment to Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia. The violation was discovered during the examination of his asset declarations.
In his remarks, Gorduladze noted that a diplomat renting a house from a representative of an opposition party would be the basis for a scandal in any country.
“It is unimaginable for any diplomat to rent accommodation in favour of a specific radical opposition or an opposition party - such a thing would trigger a diplomatic scandal anywhere in the world. But this, too, is hardly surprising, given that Fischer has turned into an ordinary representative and defender of the collective United National Movement”, the Parliament official said.
