Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Wednesday commented on the European Union’s enlargement report, saying that “deep state-appointed bureaucrats” were predictably opposed to laws that do not align with their own agenda.
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that the laws adopted in Georgia aim to promote transparency, not to hinder media operations, and protect minority rights.
“We know very well that so-called ‘rich NGOs’ are instruments in the hands of these forces, through which they stage revolutions and bring chaos to different countries. This has already been exposed by the current US administration itself. Therefore, transparency is not in their interest. The laws we have adopted merely demand transparency”, Machavariani said.
He also dismissed concerns about media freedom in Georgia, highlighting the country’s pluralistic media environment.
“There are no question marks regarding the media, considering how pluralistic the media landscape is in Georgia. Opposition channels - whether it’s Formula or TV Pirveli - all operate freely. Nobody is obstructing their work in any way”, he continued.
Addressing the recently adopted law on family values and the protection of minors, Machavariani emphasised its importance and alignment with the country’s shared values.
“As for the law on family values and the protection of minors, the entire nation agrees that this law is very important. Georgia has an anti-discrimination law in place that fully ensures the protection of the rights of all minorities”, he concluded.
