Levan Machavariani, the First Deputy Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the legislative body, on Wednesday asserted that “no one will be able to stop us” from joining the European Union once the country is ready for membership in 2030.
Machavariani’s remarks were made in response to the European Union's latest enlargement report, which has drawn a sharp reaction from the ruling party.
He labeled the critical assessments in the report as “expected” and part of an ongoing “circulation of lies and absolutely baseless accusations”, which he claims began after Georgia refused to open a “second front” following the start of military actions in Ukraine.
“For us, this was expected. The circulation of lies and absolutely baseless accusations continues. This started exactly from the day military actions began in Ukraine, due to the fact that Georgia refused to open a second front”, the official said.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the Euro-Atlantic path, stressing that the country will continue to fulfill its obligations under the Association Agreement.
“We will continue to fulfill the obligations assumed under the Association Agreement and we will continue the process of harmonising our legislation with the European Union legislation. When we are ready to join the European Union in 2030, no one will prevent us from doing so”, Machavariani concluded.
