Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Saturday declared EuroNest resolutions that dismiss Georgia’s elections as a “red line”, accusing the European Parliament of undermining the Georgian people’s democratic mandate and the OSCE’s credibility.
Makhashvili's comments came after recent EuroNest resolutions that labelled Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections as “rigged”, called the elected Government “self-proclaimed”, and described convicted attackers on state institutions as “political prisoners”.
“The entries in the EuroNest resolution are a red line for us - we cannot allow or accept the disrespect of the Georgian people's will, which was expressed, among other things, in the elections”, he said.
The official argued that by rejecting Georgia’s electoral outcome, the European Parliament effectively nullified the OSCE/ODIHR observation mission’s findings and undermined democratic institutions across the Eastern Partnership.
“The public is aware of other resolutions adopted by the European Parliament itself, but until this point, we do not intend to participate and thereby justify their approach, attitude, and the process of satisfying their political egos. In reality, with this text, the European Parliament is not only practically annulling the elections of its own neighbours and democratic institutions in general, but it also does not recognise and annuls the results of the OSCE observation mission and the institution as a whole”, Makhashvili concluded.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday announced that Georgia’s delegation would boycott future EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly sessions, accusing the European Parliament of weaponising the platform to blackmail and delegitimise Georgia’s democratic institutions.
