Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday said the ruling Georgian Dream party had won ten consecutive elections over the past 13 years against the same political force whose possible ban was currently being discussed.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze noted that repeated electoral victories did not allow the ruling team to ensure the development of a full-fledged democratic political system in the country, and this sense of responsibility was the key driver behind the preparation of the constitutional lawsuit.
“For 13 years now, we have won 10 consecutive elections against the political force whose ban is under discussion. At this point, it is not a problem for us subjectively - the Georgian Dream remains in power and continues to receive the people’s mandate each time. However, this is not enough - what matters most is that the country’s interests must be protected”, the PM said.
“We may keep winning elections and retaining our mandate from the people, but ultimately, this does not enable us to achieve our main goal - to establish a genuine, fully functional democratic political system in the country. This is what drives us - not a subjective interest to remain in power. We already manage that, and, to some extent, the existence of these political forces even makes it easier for us to stay in government. When your only opponent is a completely discredited political force, it naturally increases the ruling party’s chances. But this is not our subjective interest. What drives us is the objective interest of ensuring the formation of a sound system in Georgia”, Kobakhidze concluded.
