Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Wednesday said that this year has not been significantly different from previous ones for Georgian society, noting that most citizens were in a “state of anticipation” to see what challenges the country might face.
In his interview with Adjara TV channel, Kavelashvili noted that the domestic opposition had the opportunity to continue acting with a sense of state responsibility and to enter Parliament, however, their plan from the very beginning was to pursue violent actions in the country.
“Even before the elections, the Government was discussing potential challenges and identifying possible sources of these challenges. We were consistent in explaining how both external and internal forces were jointly attempting to harm our state and its institutions. The [2024] October 26 elections were one of the factors they used as a pretext to trigger violent actions. They knew very well that they did not have enough support to win. In my view, the opposition gained a decent number of votes - having 40 percent in a democratic country is not a bad result. They could have continued thinking in state-oriented terms and entered Parliament”, the President said.
Kavelashvili emphasised that today Georgia enjoys peace, stability, and opportunities for further development - an achievement he credited to the majority of society that continues to stand by the state.
“Peace, stability, economic growth, progress in various sectors - these are all visible realities in our country, supported by the majority of our citizens. There remains a very small minority that, together with external forces, still attempts to carry out certain actions, but this trend is fading. What matters is that our society is well-informed, and it is our duty to ensure that more citizens are involved in state-building. Supporters of the ruling party and those who understand the real situation in our country continue to stand by the state. This has ensured that today Georgia maintains peace, stability, and the opportunity to advance even further”, he concluded.
