Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the Government would not allow 20-30 people to abuse and cause discomfort to residents of Tbilisi
In his remarks, Machavariani noted that if protesters blocked the central avenue despite the warning, thepolice would act in accordance with the law.
“We will not allow 20-30 people to abuse and cause discomfort to the citizens of Tbilisi. Therefore, first of all, there will be a warning from the police when a small group tries to block the central avenue, and if they still try to cause harm, in this case, law enforcement agencies will act in accordance with the law”, Machavariani said.
Georgian Parliament on Thursday adopted amendments to the Criminal Code that tighten liability for violations of the rules governing assemblies and manifestations.
According to the amendment, participants in assemblies or demonstrations who cover their faces with masks, possess tear gas or toxic substances, block roads, or erect temporary constructions will face administrative detention of up to 15 days for a first offense.
If the offender is an organiser of the demonstration, the detention may extend to 20 days.
