Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday highlighted the main goal of ensuring that “enemies of democracy” were excluded from the political arena.
Speaking to journalists about the constitutional lawsuit concerning the possible banning of certain political parties, Papuashvili said that several legal options were being considered.
“You know there are options regarding parties, options concerning associated individuals, and also options related to successor parties. Our main goal is to ensure that enemies of democracy do not have a place in the political process. Whichever option achieves this result more effectively, efficiently, and precisely, that is what we will do”, the Speaker noted.
He further highlighted that the legal challenge had already been drafted and was currently undergoing final refinements to ensure it met the highest standards.
“The lawsuit will be submitted this week. This process must correspond to the significance of the matter. Extremist groups have no place in the democratic space. Enemies of democracy should not have the ability to use democratic processes against democracy. This is the essence of a resilient democracy, which is why mechanisms exist, including in Georgia, to prevent parties that violate the Constitution from participating in democratic processes. Details of the legal claim will be presented soon”, Papuashvili concluded.
