Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday expressed hope that the recall of German Ambassador Peter Fischer would serve as a “signal for reboot” in bilateral relations.
In his remarks, Papuashvili noted that this case should serve as an example for all ambassadors to remain within the bounds of diplomacy.
“We saw that instead of serving as a bridge between governments, the ambassador chose to build a wall between our countries, which is regrettable. We witnessed his attacks on the Georgian Government and his support for radical groups. Under his tenure, our 30-year partnership with Germany reached a low point. We hope this recall is a signal for a reset. We are ready to restore relations to the level they deserve”, the Speaker said.
He further added that Georgia’s position on the issue remained unchanged, and the official Tbilisi was standing firm on its stance.
“The fact that the ambassador was recalled is important. We have our arguments and hope this serves as a reminder that ambassadors must remain within the bounds of diplomacy”, Papuashvili concluded.
The German Foreign Ministry has recalled its Ambassador to Georgia for consultations.
