Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, on Monday commented on Georgia ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, stating that if the elections were conducted properly, their outcome should be respected.
In his remarks, Bettel noted that at this stage he had no evidence suggesting the elections were unfair.
“I’ve even heard that the elections were difficult. I am not a member of any monitoring board or body, but I’ve heard that people are now very dissatisfied. If the elections were held properly, we must respect the outcome. If not, then we should see what can be done. Georgia has chosen a European future. I currently have no evidence that the elections were unfair. If that’s not the case, then we need to discuss it. It’s unfortunate if they drift away from Europe - they were very close to it”, he said.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council has begun its session, which includes discussion of Georgia. Some ministers continue spreading disinformation traditionally focused on so-called political prisoners and the country’s foreign policy path. The key figures behind the attacks remain unchanged - Finland’s Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos - while the attempted overthrow of the Georgian Government remains ignored.
