Mariam Lashkhi, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Education, Science, and Youth Affairs Committee, on Sunday said that Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, Peter Fischer, had violated diplomatic ethics and exceeded his mandate and emphasised the need for an appropriate response to prevent further harm to Georgia-Germany relations.
In her remarks, Lashkhi argued that the German ambassador’s conduct had crossed the boundaries of acceptable diplomatic engagement, noting that such activism damaged mutual trust between the two countries and undermined the broader relationship between Georgia and the European Union.
“In addition to violating all ethical norms, he also undermines European values in the first place by interfering in internal affairs and blatantly supporting violent actors. We see that this is being assessed even by European parliamentarians, who evaluate his behaviour very adequately and realistically - this is a very correct approach”, she said.
“When a diplomat engages in such actions and activism, they exceed diplomatic activities, and it is important for the country to respond to prevent further damage to the relationship between the two countries and, most importantly, to the attitude toward the European Union”, Lashkhi concluded.
Tomasz Froelich, a German member of the European Parliament, on Saturday said that Georgia’s sovereignty must be protected, further criticising the European Union’s current approach toward the country.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Froelich expressed concern over what he described as the EU’s “incorrect” handling of relations with Georgia, accusing Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, of interfering in Georgia’s internal political affairs.
Questions about Peter Fischer’s activities and controversial actions have already arisen in Germany. The issue is being investigated by the country’s most popular and highly rated party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is seeking answers from the Foreign Ministry.
