Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Friday commented on the inquiry into the activities of Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, stating that when there were legitimate and well-founded questions, those questions required answers.
In his remarks, Makhashvili emphasised that this was the kind of responsible approach expected from all partners.
“This is the correct, responsible approach. When there are legitimate and well-founded questions regarding an ambassador and their activities, these questions must be answered, and this is the kind of responsible approach we expect from all partners”, he said.
“Instead of avoiding questions – including through the use of parliamentary tools – everyone should examine such cases, because ultimately, it reflects on the reputation of their own countries and the finances of their taxpayers”, Makhashvili concluded.
Concerns surrounding the activities of Peter Fischer, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia, have now reached Germany itself.
The issue has drawn the attention of the country’s most popular and high-ranking political force, Alternative for Germany (AfD), which is demanding answers from the Federal Foreign Office.
The inquiry appeared on the official website of the Bundestag, following reports about Fischer’s recent diplomatic engagements in Georgia.
