Archil Gorduladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, on Thursday emphasised the importance of banning political parties that act against the Constitution and the people of Georgia, in line with constitutional provisions.
In his remarks, Gorduladze noted that representatives of such parties should also be banned from political activities, as provided for by international practice and the legislative framework of a number of countries.
“Under the Constitution of Georgia, the creation of any party that fights against democracy and the state is prohibited. There are specific grounds listed, all of which have been violated by the collective United National Movement [opposition] and related individuals who built a violent regime, as well as other so-called parties now merged into various registered political entities”, the Parliament official said.
“Accordingly, it is essential that parties acting against the Constitution and the people be dissolved and banned, as the Constitution demands. Furthermore, individuals associated with such parties should also be prohibited from engaging in political activity, in accordance with international practices and the legislative frameworks of numerous countries”, he concluded.
The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Issues is set to consider, on an expedited basis, amendments to the Law on the Constitutional Court of Georgia. The proposed changes would prevent individuals connected to parties violating the principles of the Constitution from running in parliamentary or local elections, holding political office, or creating political parties.
