Vladimir Bozhadze, the Chair of the parliamentary political group European Socialists, on Wednesday emphasised the importance of voter engagement for the country’s democracy by saying that “the destiny of our country will no longer be determined in the streets”.
In his remarks, Bozhadze criticised the radical opposition for not only abstaining from the elections themselves but also for discouraging their supporters from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
“I want to extend my special thanks to the people of our country - 1,438,136 citizens -who came out on election day, participated in the voting process, and once again entrusted specific political parties with the responsibility of managing their municipalities. Participation in elections is the true measure of democracy. This was the bright side of October 4”, Bozhadze said.
He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Service for preventing a plan that, according to him, aimed to destabilise the country and orchestrate a coup.
