Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday urged a clear distinction between the European Union’s core values and the actions of Brussels’ bureaucracy, advocating for support of EU forces aligned with traditional values, such as those in Hungary and Slovakia, to counter policies that deviate from Christian morality.
In his remarks, Papuashvili stressed that Georgia’s goal was to join the European Union, not to align with Brussels’ bureaucratic agenda, which he viewed as straying from the EU’s foundational Christian morality.
“Why does the European Commission demand the repeal of the law on family values? Doesn’t the law clearly state that promoting gender transition for minors should not be allowed in Georgia? Brussels and the European Union must be distinguished from each other - the EU is based on entirely different values, a different foundation, and historical experience. What Europe and the EU are founded on is, above all, Christian morality. What the Brussels bureaucracy is doing is a deviation from European values. Therefore, each time, we call on the Brussels bureaucracy to return to the EU’s values. We are not entering Brussels; we are talking about joining the European Union - therefore, our goal is to support those forces in the EU that share the right values”, the Speaker said.
He further criticised the European Commission’s push to repeal Georgia’s law protecting minors from gender transition and expressed support for EU countries like Hungary and Slovakia, where governments resisted what he described as Brussels’ imposition of absurd strategies.
“I am referring to the governments of Hungary and Slovakia. In various countries, forces are coming to power or gaining strength that oppose the absurdity that Brussels is trying to impose. Our task should be to strengthen those forces in the EU that are based on true European values, so that when the moment of our membership arrives, we are met not by a bureaucracy that promotes strategies denying human nature, but by a bureaucracy truly rooted in European values”, he concluded.
