Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Sunday said the failed coup attempt on Saturday was a final warning to both domestic and foreign actors, condemning their continued calls for new tactics to overthrow the Government and criticising the silence of foreign sponsors who supported the violent protest.
In his remarks, Papuashvili condemned the European Commission’s prior support for the rally and their lack of response after its failure, asserting that Georgia’s Government would act decisively within constitutional limits to ensure stability and safeguard the nation’s progress.
“A few days ago, we heard a statement from the European Commission’s spokesperson, who expressed solidarity with the gathering announced for October 4 aimed at overthrowing the Government. Despite our repeated indications of the harmful nature of this statement, no one has distanced themselves from it. Of course, the public will not forget this open support and expect an explanation”, Papuashvili said.
“The deafening silence of the extremists’ foreign sponsors and protectors regarding their failed violent overthrow attempt clearly shows the true value they place on democracy, human rights, and the peaceful development of the Georgian people”, he continued.
The Speaker described the failed attempt to overthrow the Government as a critical lesson for those seeking to destabilise Georgia.
“The failed coup attempt on October 4 must serve as a final warning to everyone, both inside and outside the country. There are already calls suggesting that yesterday’s attempt to overthrow the Government was only a temporary setback and that they need to change tactics, continue provocations, and will inevitably overthrow the Government. It is hard to imagine greater cynicism, hatred, and a more blatant chronicle of betrayal of the homeland than what these people are orchestrating”, he noted.
“However, the lesson of October 4 has been learned. Within the framework of the Constitution and the law, the Georgian Government will do everything to ensure the country is protected, the people have peace, and Georgia and our children have a future. With calm, strength, dignity, loyalty, and love, good has triumphed over evil”, Papuashvili concluded.
