Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Sunday lauded Georgia’s law enforcement agencies for thwarting a foreign-orchestrated attempt at “Maidanization” and chaos, protecting the nation from bloodshed.
In his remarks, Papuashvili asserted that Georgia had narrowly avoided chaos, bloodshed, and a regression to its troubled history, crediting law enforcement’s bravery rather than any restraint from extremists or their foreign backers.
“Any alternative agenda, fabricated and false reality, was put to an end by yesterday’s events. At the same time, yesterday, Georgia escaped Madanization, bloodshed, chaos, and a return to a dark past. We escaped not because any extremist or their foreign instructor came to their senses. We escaped because law enforcement defended their country. Thanks to every police officer, special forces' member, security service, and government protection personnel who, at the risk of their own lives and health, prevented internal and external enemies from breaching the boundaries of our country’s peaceful development”, Papuashvili said.
The Speaker further condemned foreign-directed actors driven by ambition and revenge for attempting to undermine Georgia’s elected government and its people’s aspirations, declaring their defeat a victory for national stability.
“Internal and external forces, which have been trying to destabilise Georgia for years, attempted to wage a decisive battle against the Georgian people and were bitterly defeated. Yesterday, we saw foreign-directed individuals who were ready, driven by their ambitions, hatred, and desire for revenge, to overthrow the legitimately elected Government and, along with it, the future of Georgia, our people, and our children”, he concluded.
Radical opposition supporters on Saturday stormed the courtyard of the Georgian presidential palace.
The protesters damaged the barriers and managed to enter the courtyard, but the riot police managed to remove the demonstrators from the scene.
