Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday reacted to the recent events near the Presidential Palace, stating that the official spokesperson of the European Union publicly expressed support for the protest.
Kobakhidze’s remarks came after radical opposition supporters had stormed the courtyard of the Georgian presidential palace.
He stressed that, in this context, the EU Ambassador to Georgia bears a special responsibility to clearly distance himself from this and strongly condemn everything taking place in the streets of Tbilisi.
“You know that specific individuals from abroad have directly expressed support for what is effectively a planned attempt to overthrow the constitutional order. Among them was the spokesperson of the European Union, who openly expressed support for this attempt. This protest was declared under such a title, and the EU spokesperson publicly endorsed it. On this backdrop, the EU Ambassador to Georgia has a particular responsibility to come forward, take a clear stance, distance himself, and strongly condemn everything happening in Tbilisi’s streets. This is their direct responsibility, especially given that we have witnessed and heard these supportive statements regarding an attempt to overthrow the constitutional order. Let’s see what their reaction will be in this regard”, Kobakhidze said.
