Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Head of Georgia’s State Security Service, on Wednesday said some opposition groups were seriously discussing plans to stage actions that could trigger public outrage during the upcoming October 4 rally, coinciding with the local elections day.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Mdinaradze noted that the current atmosphere in the country differs from previous periods of protest, and the opposition appears to be seeking ways to provoke strong emotions among the public.
“According to our information, they need to plan something that would provoke strong emotions among people. But I would not advise anyone not only to do such things, but even to think about them. The state’s response would be very tough, and I don’t think anyone would like that kind of legal reaction”, he said.
The official stressed that the opposition was free to protest but must remain within the boundaries of the law.
“If they want to protest, let them protest - but without stepping outside the legal framework. This country will hold elections with dignity, it will overcome challenges, and our strong, established state will only grow stronger”, he concluded.
