Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and Honorary Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday published an open letter, stressing that Georgia’s survival and victories of recent years were part of the nation’s long history of resilience.
In a letter, Ivanishvili noted that Georgia’s history included constant struggle, and today the country was still fighting, however, against a transformed enemy and new challenges.
“The past 13 years are a logical continuation of our centuries-old existence. In 2012 we not only survived but also prevailed. However, if we fail to safeguard the freedom we have gained, we risk losing everything we have built throughout the years”, he said.
“Today, we are once again fighting - though against a transformed enemy and new challenges. Our current frontline is about preserving peace and stability”, Ivanishvili continued.
Ivanishvili further underlined that Georgia’s past had been marked by sacrifice for survival, the pursuit of independence, the building of a state worth reckoning with, and the protection of homeland, language, and faith - the key pillars of Georgian identity.
“Today, we continue this fight, but with different threats. Our battle now is to preserve peace and stability - the only path toward development, a better future, and a united Georgia. We must clearly realize that we are walking once again on a tightrope, and we cannot afford to stumble. Sovereignty and independence demand constant vigilance”, the ruling party founder continued.
Reflecting on the past decade, he acknowledged that mistakes had been made but emphasized they had not reached a scale that could endanger Georgia’s statehood or physical survival.
“Of course, there have been mistakes over the past 13 years; however, fortunately, not of such magnitude that our statehood or physical existence was ever under threat, nor of such magnitude that they could not be corrected or overcome”, he concluded.
