Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on European Integration, on Monday said the ban of the opposition United National Movement party and its satellites should be pursued through the Constitutional Court, as promised to the public.
In his remarks, Makhashvili noted that this process would continue, and it was up to the Constitutional Court to determine whether the presented evidence was substantiated.
“Most importantly, if anyone has objections, instead of making loud public statements, they should bring their arguments before the Constitutional Court. Why should it be banned? The answer lies in the materials of the temporary investigative commission. This party [UNM] represented a violent regime that stifled and suffocated the development of society”, the Parliament official said.
“Unfortunately, this process is still continuing today with whatever resources they possess. Fortunately, they lack state resources, but they are still attempting to suppress and undermine healthy political life. There is sufficient ground for banning this party”, he concluded.
