Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday commented on the recent resolution initiated by the French Senate concerning Georgia, arguing that Eurocrats were undermining their own reputation in the eyes of Georgian citizens.
The resolution criticised Georgia for allegedly holding imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili in “harsh and inappropriate conditions”.
“The latest resolution is yet another absurdity. In general, Eurocrats are damaging their own reputation in the eyes of our citizens. In recent years, these resolutions have consistently claimed that [imprisoned former President] Saakashvili is supposedly a political prisoner who should be released’, Machavariani said.
He reminded the public of the démarche staged by ambassadors of EU member states at Georgia’s Ministry of Justice, when they alleged that Saakashvili was being subjected to inhuman treatment, was on the verge of death, and had to be transferred abroad for medical care.
“Later, the European Court of Human Rights determined that everything was in order. Indeed, everything is in order, Mr. Saakashvili is feeling perfectly fine, and no one has apologised. They continue this behaviour, and it is counterproductive for them”, he concluded.
