Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Sunday said that President Mikheil Kavelashvili’s visit to the United States and his speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly present an important opportunity to present Georgia’s position to the world and reset relations with the US.
In his remarks, Kaladze underlined the importance of utilising the UN platform to counter misinformation and ensure Georgia’s voice was heard internationally.
“This is another important platform that must be used to ensure the whole world hears the truth. The messages we hear from some congressmen are filled with lies. Our main task is to start relations from a clean slate, to deepen friendly and partnership relations with the United States”, Kaladze said.
He stressed that partnership must be reciprocal and warned against unjust criticism directed at Georgia.
“You cannot provide an example of us sending anti-Western messages. We are forced to defend ourselves, our country, and our state when we hear false messages and threats. Whether from America, Europe, or Russia, no one will be given the opportunity to unjustly criticise our country with messages from congressmen bought for 80,000. Partnership and friendship are mutual. We will not allow anyone to sacrifice our country for their own interests. The statements based on lies and threats from the previous administration are categorically unacceptable”, he concluded.
Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili on Sunday departed for New York to participate in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly and to hold a series of high-level meetings.
As part of his visit, Kavelashvili is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary General António Guterres to discuss key issues of international and regional importance.
