Levan Machavariani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday dismissed the domestic opposition’s calls for the Government’s overthrow and warned that the state would not allow any attempt to destabilise the country.
Speaking about the opposition’s planned rally on October 4, Machavariani expressed confidence that their efforts would fail.
“Of course, nothing will come of their plans on October 4, despite the fact that we cannot afford to let our guard down, and they will bring some kind of chaos. However, the state stands very firmly, especially law enforcement institutions, and accordingly, we will not allow anyone to destabilise the country”, Machavariani said.
The official also commented on the decision of the opposition Lelo party to participate in the rally, arguing that this proves their alignment with the so-called radical opposition.
“Lelo’s statement about joining the October 4 rally once again shows that they cannot break away from the radical line they have followed for years. Despite the instructions being set up in a way that Lelo and Gakharia are supposed to distance themselves from this radicalism, they still cannot do so and end up there. Moreover, they know in advance what the outcome will be. When they nominate someone like Kupradze as a candidate, they obviously know in advance that they are doomed. This is a direct insult to their voters, and accordingly, they are betting more on the development of a radical scenario,” he concluded.
