British Ambassador to Georgia Gareth Ward on Wednesday refused to comment on a reported meeting with opposition figures Gia Baramidze and Giga Bokeria held at the British Embassy.
The meeting, recorded by Imedi TV, reportedly involved discussions about the opposition’s planned rally on October 4.
Members of the ruling Georgian Dream party criticised the meeting, calling it an inappropriate attempt by a diplomatic mission to interfere in domestic politics.
When asked by Imedi TV to clarify the purpose of the meeting, Ward declined to comment.
“I’m not going to give you a comment now”, Ward said.
Opposition figure Gia Baramidze confirmed that he had met with a representative of the British Foreign Office and discussed the October 4 rally.
