Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday criticised statements made by several high-ranking European Union officials regarding the detention of the opposition Coalition for Change leader Elene Khoshtaria, saying their claims that she is a political prisoner are unfounded and harmful to the EU itself.
“These are nothing but political speculations. This is the usual dirt and manipulation we see from certain bureaucrats. Their statements are based on lies and damage the European Union itself. How can anyone claim, in absolute terms, that white is black? Unfortunately, this is not the first time”, the ruling party official said.
“The public understands everything very well. Everyone sees that violent groups in the country have been funded for years, with significant sums spent to create them. All of this comes from outside financing. They have their sponsors - both among certain diplomats inside the country and foreign actors abroad. Every attempt to sow hatred, violence, and division in our society is supported by external forces”, he continued.
Addressing the upcoming local elections, the Mayor dismissed the opposition’s chances, asserting they serve foreign interests rather than the Georgian people.
“You can clearly see the opposition’s lack of support and their current state. They have no backing from the public, no resources to win. On October 4, they will be defeated in every single electoral district. The Georgian people will once again deliver a verdict against them. They are agents of foreign powers, and such political parties have no place in our country’s political life”, he concluded.
