Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday underscored the importance of deepening relations with China, calling strategic partnership and economic cooperation with the country “very important for Georgia”.
Kaladze’s statement came in response to the US Helsinki Commission’s remarks concerning Georgia’s efforts to expand ties with China.
In his remarks, Kaladze noted that strengthening economic and political links with Beijing aligns with broader regional trends.
“For us, partnership with China is very important in general. If you observe, all neighbouring countries are striving to have good relations with China in all areas. Accordingly, we have repeatedly clarified that strategic partnership and economic cooperation with China are very important, and we wholeheartedly welcome it”, Kaladze said.
He sharply criticised domestic opponents of this policy, describing them as “externally controlled agents” acting against Georgia’s interests.
“As for what these agents want and what drives them, we all know very well. They are simply enemies of the country, controlled from abroad, acting in the interests of external forces and carrying out every instruction they are given. They are ready to go against the country and its people. That’s what these individuals represent, and the country’s population will always hold them accountable”, he noted.
Kaladze concluded by saying that “those who serve foreign forces and are ready to go against the country and the Georgian people have no place in our country”.
