Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Thursday said the Georgian Government would not allow the country to be drawn into war or used in the same way as Ukraine, avoiding the severe consequences seen there.
In his remarks, Kaladze noted that multiple calls had been made, including by senior Ukrainian officials, urging Tbilisi to open a second front amid the ongoing war.
“There were direct appeals to join the war. This is not something we are inventing. In cabinet meetings, there were direct threats to the Prime Minister and party leadership that a second front should be opened and all combat support provided. In addition, high-ranking officials - including, I believe, Ukraine’s Secretary of the Security Council - openly said Georgia should intervene and open a second front. Of course, this is very serious”, he said.
“Through our policy and perspective, we protect our country and pursue a strategy that prioritises the interests of our homeland. We will not allow anyone to use our country as Ukraine was used, or suffer the same severe consequences seen there”, Kaladze concluded.
