Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday emphasised the need for a renewed and clearly defined roadmap in Georgia-US relations.
Kobakhidze responded to President Mikheil Kavelashvili’s letter addressed to US President Donald Trump. In an open letter, Kavelashvili called for a reboot in relations and stressed that the Trump administration has not paid sufficient attention to Georgia.
“I fully share the pathos of the President’s letter. Our message is well-known: we want to relaunch the strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States on a clean slate with a concrete guideline”, Kobakhidze told journalists.
The Prime Minister underlined that nothing could hinder this process if what he described as the “deep state” does not prevail.
“As a society, we are also surprised by the passivity we see. Our strong desire is for this passivity to shift into another mode - an active mode - and accordingly to begin discussions on the renewal of our strategic partnership. We remain hopeful that the partnership will be reassessed. If the ‘deep state’ does not prevail, I believe nothing will stand in the way of resetting relations between Georgia and the US”, he concluded.
