David Matikashvili, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Monday emphasised that for Georgia and its people, establishing fair and partner-based relations was of utmost importance.
Matikashvili responded to President Mikheil Kavelashvili’s letter addressed to US President Donald Trump. In an open letter, Kavelashvili called for a reboot in relations and stressed that the Trump administration has not paid sufficient attention to Georgia.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Matikashvili reflected on past challenges in relations with the United States and underlined the need for renewed cooperation.
“Fair and partner-based relations are extremely important for our country, our people, and for Georgia. Unfortunately, under the previous US administration, especially during the final period of its term, we witnessed the opposite - unfair and non-partner relations”, the Parliament official said.
He recalled that during that time, steps were taken that culminated in the abrupt termination of the strategic partnership. According to him, this move was “absolutely unfair and filled with numerous false accusations, without any real arguments from the American side”.
Matikashvili stressed that there were “many overlaps” between the political vision of the ruling Georgian Dream party and President Donald Trump, ranging from the defence of family values and opposition to what he called “LGBT propaganda” to the principle of protecting national sovereignty.
He also highlighted Trump’s declared fight against the so-called “deep state”, linking it to the closure of USAID operations. Despite this alignment, Matikashvili argued that Georgia has not yet seen “active and enthusiastic relations” from the US, which he described as “surprising and raising questions,” particularly given the ideological common ground.
Matikashvili further pointed out that Georgian President Kavelashvili’s open letter to Donald Trump represented a public step towards filling this “vacuum” in relations and proposing a fresh start.
